Retained Firefighters

27th October 2017

As part of my ongoing efforts to meet with those on the frontline of our public services, I was very pleased to meet with Norfolk’s Chief Fire Officer, David Ashworth, at Dereham Fire Station recently.

Recruitment of fire fighters, BOTH male and female, is key to developing the efficiency of a diverse, modern Fire Service, and Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service are currently on the lookout for enthusiastic recruits who are interested in joining the ranks of their Retained Duty System (RDS).

A fire fighter on the RDS provides an on call part time service, responding to fire and emergency calls using the same appliances and equipment as Wholetime firefighters. There are currently opportunities at 31 of the 39 retained stations across Norfolk (including at Attleborough, Dereham, Hingham and Hethersett) and roles offer flexible working hours – even for those who work or have childcare responsibilities.

If you are interested in this rewarding and fulfilling opportunity, please do go to the Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service’s website ( for more information.
