Today I attended an excellent seminar by M+A Partners and Mills & Reeve in the John Innes Centre about R+D Relief and Patent Boxes. From my previous career in biomedical research and having started my own business I understand the crucial importance of correct financial and legal advice to new businesses, particularly when it comes to funding R+D.
Norfolk, and in particular the Norwich Research Park is a centre of innovation and numerous start-ups are based here. The recently launched Patent Box (April 2013) enables these start-ups who are liable to Corporation Tax and who make a profit from exploiting patented inventions to receive further benefits. Initiatives like this are key to assisting our economic recovery and will enable us to be in a stronger position to export our research knowledge and best practices to the rapidly developing world.
