Encouraging aspiration in our schools and supporting the great work done by teachers in our area is one of my central priorities as a Member of Parliament.

That’s why I was delighted to visit St Peter and St Paul Carbrooke Primary Academy last week to take part in a Q and A with the pupils and tell them more about some of the work I do in Westminster and Norfolk and what it is like to be a Member of Parliament.

Having recently become an Academy, the school is also a great example of the education reforms put in place under this Government, allowing more schools to convert to Academies and trusting Headteachers to have greater control over their own schools, with key decisions taken on the frontline rather than from a desk in Whitehall.

The questions from the pupils were many and varied, including “Who do you answer to?!” The answer, as I tried to explain in terms of the upcoming General Election, is the people of Mid Norfolk. I believe it is vital to combat voter apathy by properly explaining the way our parliamentary democracy works to the next generation. Last week’s visit was an encouraging sign that our democracy here in Norfolk will be in good health for many generations to come!
