The Society began in 1959 as a not-for-profit organisation, set up to assist the public with problem feet and footwear queries and to educate the footwear industry.

Laura West has administered the S.S.F. for the past 25 years and is based in Hingham. Laura says “Running a not-for-profit organisation is harder than a charity as we don’t receive the benefits or advice attributed to charities. We are self-funded and receive no government assistance, despite helping thousands of people annually. A team of 10 volunteers, including Prof. Wesley Vernon OBE and Gwenda Carter – author of Therapeutic Footwear, throughout the country help guide the organisation.
