In order to trade our way out of this debt crisis and balance the books, the UK needs to find something it can sell. The UK is a world leader in life science research and it is my belief that this sector will play a key role in paving the way to our economic recovery by developing and exporting the products and services that the rest of the world needs; from the continued provision of medicine, to food, to energy. To help make this a reality, I spent much of last year intimately involved in developing the UK's Life Science strategy, which outlined how the Government intended to unlock the potential of the life science sector to provide better treatment for patients and stimulate economic growth. That is why I travelled to the BIO 2012 conference in Boston in June this year and why, following its huge success, I travelled to Sweden in September with the aim of promoting the UK as a global destination of choice for life science inward investment and to support UK companies in overseas markets.

During the two day trip, I met with the HM Ambassador and a number of Swedish companies who responded incredibly positively to the UK's Life Science Strategy, leaving many Swedish academics, clinicians and policy makers applauding the UK for its strong vision and leadership and asking the question of their MP's 'why can't you be as pro-active as the UK Government?'. None of this will be quick or easy, but I do believe it provides an answer to how to inspire sustainable economic growth whilst tackling some of the key societal issues facing the UK and other countries around world. That is why I continue to champion in Parliament the importance of our life science sector and its seminal contribution to both the UK's health and wealth.
