Britain needs to face up to the severity of the economic crisis, one that we cannot borrow our way out of, but one that we need to trade our way out of. The way to do this is by exploiting what we are best at, such as our world class life sciences and agricultural and digital technologies, to create new products and services to sell to emerging global markets. I am passionate about an entrepreneurial and innovative economy, which is why I have campaigned for improved infrastructure – faster and more reliable rail connections and better broadband availability.

It was these central messages that I took to the fringe events of the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham this week and presented to think tanks, medical charities, health industry representatives and other politicians. Speaking at ten different events discussing topics that ranged from the role of the life science sector and the 'appliance of science' to economic growth and job creation, to analysis of the politics of sustainability during a time of austerity, to the key role of infrastructural investment as a platform for growth, the message was clear: I believe science and infrastructure hold the key to the UK's economic resurgency and I will continue to campaign for the industrial policy and investment needed to unlock their potential in Norfolk and across the country.
