Sailing is one of my lifelong hobbies, and that’s why I’m delighted to support the great Dunkirk 75th Anniversary voyage organized by a charity here in Norfolk, Rescue Wooden Boats.

In May 2015, Dunkirk “Little Ship”, the lifeboat Lucy Lavers is going back to Dunkirk after 75 years. She is joining fifty other vessels on the Dunkirk Anniversary Voyage to France, and back. It will be the first time she’s been there since June 1940 when she took part in the evacuation of Allied troops stranded in Dunkirk. It was her very first trip as a new lifeboat.

Lucy Lavers sails from Wells-next-the-Sea, in Norfolk, in early May 2015, calling at Lowestoft, Southwold, Aldeburgh, Harwich, and Ramsgate, and arriving at Dunkirk, with the Little Ships flotilla, as near to the 75th Anniversary as wind and tide will permit.

The journey is 385 nautical miles and is estimated to cost £90 per nautical mile, making a total for the voyage of about £35,000. Rescue Wooden Boats has already raised £7,000 towards this, and are working hard to raise more from private and charitable donors.
