2 women every week are killed by a current or former partner. 1 in every 3 women will experience domestic abuse in her life. Norfolk alone saw a 40% increase in domestic violence during the pandemic.
These are truly shocking statistics – and that’s why I continue to work with local community groups and charities that provide support to victims and their families, as well as key local figures (including the Lord Lieutenant, High Sheriff and Police and Crime Commissioner), to raise awareness of this awful issue and provide support where I can.
In recent months, I have been raising the views of the Taskforce that I helped convene with those key figures and the likes of the Daisy Programme (see more about their vital work here) with ministers and officials in Westminster. I am pleased to report that I have today also extended an invitation to the new Minister of State for Victims and Sentencing, inviting him to come to Norfolk and see first-hand the work being done by the Daisy Programme and the Norfolk Integrated Domestic Abuse Service.
Rest assured, I remain committed to doing all I can to help tackle this scourge in our society.
