A47

I was saddened to hear the news of the serious traffic accident on the stretch of the A47 between Wisbech and Guyhirn yesterday. I understand that two individuals involved were taken to hospital with “serious injuries” and that the accident resulted in that section of the A47 being closed for 10 hours.

As I have consistently made clear, we absolutely must get the A47 fully dualled – from Lowestoft in the East to the A1 in Cambridgeshire to the West. Not only will this improve safety for those using this road, it will also ensure that the economic impact caused by road closures can be reduced. Too much time is lost to such road closures, particularly on the single carriageway sections of the road, and we must address this if we are to instil confidence in businesses and commuters – and ensure that we attract greater investment and prosperity to our region. Norfolk deserves a road network fit for the 21st century.

Please be assured that I remain committed to working with my parliamentary colleagues and the A47 Alliance to push for further progress in this area, and I hope to be able to lead the charge in Westminster in the weeks ahead.
