Mental Health Update – PM’s Visit

I am so pleased that the Prime Minister has agreed to come to Mid Norfolk today to launch a programme of mental health support.

Earlier this year, Theresa May asked Paul Farmer, the Chief Executive of Mind, and Lord Stevenson to carry out an independent review into how employers can better support staff, suffering from mental ill health or poor well-being, to remain in and succeed in the workplace.

I welcome the launch of the Farmer-Stevenson review – especially in the wake of the CQC’s recent recommendation that Norfolk and Suffolk Mental Health Trust be placed back in special measures. This continued commitment from the PM and Government is vital if we are to ensure that mental health services get the recognition, and first class support, they deserve.

This has long been an issue very close to my heart and it is with great sadness for me that the Prime Minister’s visit today coincides with the news that my late friend Edward’s son, Charlie, has died – after years of struggling with bipolar disorder.

Charlie was another young man, another life, living with the pain of misunderstood mental health and it is absolutely key that we continue to work hard to bring about improvements in this area.
