Hingham – Traffic and Parking Problems

Since becoming the MP for Mid Norfolk back in 2010, I have often spoke of a model of growth and prosperity that keeps our local towns and villages thriving and vibrant. That is especially the case as we move forwards post-pandemic and look to ‘Build Back Better’ and ‘Level Up’.

That’s why I welcomed the chance to meet with Town Council representatives, Cllr Margaret Dewsbury, Cllr Yvonne Bendle and Adam Mayo (Programme and Support Engineer at NCC) in Hingham this past week to discuss the serious issues being experienced in terms of traffic (both speed and increasing quantities) and lack of parking.

The main route through Hingham includes some unique characteristics that require a reduced speed limit and for drivers to take greater precautions when passing through, including very sharp and narrow bends. Unfortunately, some drivers disregard this speed limit and, with increasing numbers of vehicles on our roads in recent years (in addition to further growth in the area), safety along this route has become of extra concern in the local community. When compounded by a lack of parking in the town centre and high numbers of drivers parking up wherever they can before taking buses into the city, it is understandable why so many are at the end of their tether.

On Friday, Adam kindly took time out of his annual leave to join us all and talk us through some potential solutions that can be explored. I look forward to picking that work up with him and the local team in the weeks ahead and to hopefully paving the way for an outcome that suits all.
