3757 - Bacterial Diseases: Drugs (Answered)

Jim Shannon
To ask the Secretary of State for Health, what estimate he has made of the likely timescale for making new drugs available on the NHS to treat Klebsiella infections.

George Freeman

We have made no such estimate.

In July 2014, my Rt. hon. Friend the Prime Minister announced an independent Review on Antimicrobial Resistance to look at the full range of issues associated with the development, use and regulation of antibiotics. The Review is consulting with a wide range of international stakeholders including the pharmaceutical industry. The Review is looking at the antimicrobial drugs pipeline and will recommend actions that can be taken globally to stimulate the development of new drugs. New antibiotics for Gram-negative bacteria such as Klebsiella are a priority as these infections can be difficult to treat.
