Sugar Beet Farming

19th October 2020

Sugar Beet plays a key part in our British farming industry, and British Sugar are world leaders in the field:

  • Championing modern sustainable farming
  • Pioneering world leading plant breeding
  • Supplying 50% of the UK’s sugar
  • Providing c.9000 jobs

BUT the industry is facing a perfect storm:

  • Bans on crop protection
  • A poor year of c.50% yields
  • Risks of “Free Trade” sugar dumping

That’s why I welcomed the opportunity to visit J E Spratt Farm at Necton on Friday to meet with Farm Manager Kevin Banham and representatives of British Sugar and NFU Sugar to discuss the challenges facing the industry (this year and , and the opportunities post-Brexit.

Let’s #BackBritishFarming and use Brexit as an opportunity to export our high food quality and farming standards around the world.
