Eccles Heath Rail Bridge

13th February 2019

I have long argued that it is vital that Norfolk has the modern rail and road network required to ensure it truly fulfils its economic potential in the 21st century, and that commuters have the reliable, safe and efficient services they need.

That’s why I have joined Liz Truss, Member of Parliament for South West Norfolk and County Councillor, Steve Askew in calling for the repair of the damaged Eccles Heath rail bridge, located between Snetterton and Attleborough of which was damaged by a vehicle in 2017, closing the route with diversions taking place via Bryant’s Bridge.

Network Rail announced only last month that work to repair the bridge was unlikely to take place until 2022 and that motorists will have to make alternative travel arrangements via diversions. Norfolk County Council has said that the diversion route in place is not suitable due to the stop junction and poor visibility.

It’s completely unacceptable for Network Rail to decide not to repair a bridge and require local road users to use a diversion for FIVE years, which the County Council as Highways Authority has said is unsafe. Network Rail seem to forget that they are a public sector agency with a statutory duty to maintain the rail network and serve, not obstruct, the public.

Rest assured, I will continue to work with the relevant parties and agencies, including raising the matter with Network Rail to ensure that all is done to allow constituents to use the road network safely as soon as is able.
