Championing NHS Innovation

Embracing innovation and new technology in our NHS has the potential to transform patient experience and drive huge efficiency savings. Yet, too often, the NHS has been slow to adopt innovation and new technology.
That’s why I was delighted to be appointed the first ever Minister for Life Sciences in charge of NHS innovation and technology. And it is why Jeremy Hunt’s speech today on how the NHS will become the world leader in 21st century personalised healthcare is such an important moment in this debate. As he says: ‘we will move the NHS to the vanguard of 21st century technology’.
Whether it is being able to book GP appointments online, access a summary of your own GP record or benefit from the shift to personalised medicine with a new generation of drugs designed round your genetic profile – technology and the digital revolution is driving patient empowerment.
Make no mistake, this is the new space race. And Britain is leading the way.
