10 September 2007
On Saturday 1st September George completed the first stage of his 110 mile bicycle tour of the new Mid Norfolk Constituency boundary to launch his campaign 'The Norfolk Way'.

Setting off from Attleborough Town Hall where he was met by the Mayor Cllr Vera Dale and given a briefing on the work of the Town Council, he completed the first 20 mile stage at Barnham Broom Hotel and Country Club later in the afternoon, having stopped to visit a number of local charities, projects and businesses along the way.

"I think people want to see their politicians out and about between elections, listening to local people's concerns. This tour is my way of getting off the beaten track to discover the people, villages, projects and businesses that make Norfolk so special."

"During the day I visited:

  • The Attleborough community enterprise and adult training facility,
  • The Besthorpe junior speedway track which encourages youngsters to take up the sport and learn to bike responsibly
  • The Wolf Brewery making real Norfok ale
  • The Rookery Business Park converted out of a former turkey unit by enterprising farmer Philip Frost
  • The Q3 motor racing team
  • A new gym being created to cater for gymnasts from local schools and as an Olympic training facility
  • The Besthorpe junction on the A11 to see for myself the problems of access
  • Wymondham College and Wymondham High - two excellent local schools
  • Wymondham Abbey
  • Barnham Boom Hotel and Country Club, to hear from staff and management about how the facility has grown to be so successful.

"It was a great chance to learn about some of the excellent things that are going on in this part of the constituency, and to talk to a lot of people who would not normally come to political meetings. The idea of the boundary tour and the Norfolk Way campaign both went down very well, and a lot of people have asked to be kept in touch."

George will be completing the rest of the 110 mile tour in stages over the winter and spring to be organised - details to follow.
