Norfolk MP in Top 10 MPs for Science and Technology

16th August 2010

George Freeman has recently been named as one of the top 10 Members of Parliament for science, technology and engineering policy.

The recent list was part of a report by Proof Communication that assessed the incoming MPs’ relevance to the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) communities using a review process that ‘considered their background, personal interests, and presence of research institute or science hub in their constituency.’

Prior to being elected, George spent 14 year career in the biomedical industry and used his inclusion in the report to highlight the Norwich Research Park and the potential of better communications along the Cambridge-Norwich corridor to unlock new opportunities for enterprise in Norfolk.

Speaking about his inclusion, George pledged to continue the work of his professional career before Parliament backing UK science and innovation, as a pro-science MP. "We need more MPs with hands on experience of science - whether at the coalface of research or as in my case the commercialisation of breakthrough new medical innovations.

“Economically there is huge potential in the UK science base for creating new jobs and businesses. There is a clear need for a more balanced and better informed approach to science and technology by policymakers, and a greater understanding of the ethical and moral questions which explosions in science will demand of Parliamentarians. I'm delighted to have been included in this list and look forward to doing what I can to support this important agenda locally and nationally.”
