George Freeman visits the last Watton Farmers Market

9th July 2012

I am a very keen supporter of local farmers markets for their abilities to bring communities together, cut food miles and give farmers direct access to customers. I try to attend as many of these as I can in my local towns of Dereham, Attleborough, Wymondham and Watton. I was sad to hear that the Watton Farmers Market was closing due to rising fuel costs and the financial difficulties facing many farmers. The stall holders’ final flourish was commendable and I enjoyed very much sampling the local produce and catching up with friends as I walked around the trestle tables. The market has been running for 12 years and has brought new visitors to Watton High Street each month. I hope when the economy recovers the Farmers Market will be back in Watton.
