To ask the Secretary of State for Health, what role is played by NHS England in deciding on the cost-effectiveness of new drug treatments.

George Freeman

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) is the independent body that advises the National Health Service on the clinical and cost effectiveness of selected new drugs and treatments.

In the absence of guidance from NICE, or where negative guidance has been issued, it is for commissioners, including NHS England in respect of its directly commissioned services, to make funding decisions based on the available evidence.
