George grew up on a farm near Newmarket, and his family have lived in North Norfolk for nearly twenty years. His wife Eleanor is from Norwich, where her family have lived for 35 years. They were married ten years ago in Norwich and have two young children.
After University, he spent five years in Westminster as Parliamentary Officer of the National Farmers Union and an active campaigner to promote a more vibrant rural economy and renaissance of local government. In 1996 he left Westminster to start his own small business and a family with his wife Eleanor, an employment solicitor in Cambridge.

Over the last ten years George has built a career and his own small business (www.4D-Biomedical.com) working with NHS Trusts, Universities and leading clinical scientists to develop new medical technologies. A strong advocate of the potential of Britain's science and enterprise to unlock huge opportunities in the global food, medicine and cleantech markets, George is on the Advisory Board of the Norwich Research Park, and a Non Exec Director of Elsoms Seeds, the UK's premier privately owned seeds business.
George returned to politics in 2003, launching 'Mind the Gap!', a non-party campaign for greater power for local communities. In 2005 he launched 'Positive Politics!', a movement to promote a new approach to party politics, and stood as Conservative Parliamentary Candidate in Stevenage. In the 2005 General Election he nearly unseated the incumbent Barbara Follet MP with one of the biggest swings in the country.

Passionate about the potential of small business and active communities to restore a 'can-do' culture of civic pride and social responsibility, George is closely involved with the Shadow Business team's work on promoting innovation and enterprise.
"I believe that Politics matters. I believe our great country is suffering from a serious crisis of trust, responsibility and community. Too many people are losing hope and feel the system is against them. Too many people feel isolated and powerless in the face of an ever growing bureaucracy. Too many people grow understandably cynical about the possibility of politics to be a force for good.
A new generation of us face a historic challenge: to inspire trust and hope in politics once again. It can be done. All around us are inspiring examples of people, families, sports clubs, businesses, communities and cities which turn themselves around. Britain can rediscover a positive sense of purpose and identity for the modern world. We can become again a place where people of all faiths, races, backgrounds and ages can live happily together. For the sake of the next generation, we must."

As a Parliamentary candidate, George spent three and a half years actively campaigning in the constituency. He cycled the constituency boundary to highlight the creation of the new constituency, as well as listening and learning about local people’s concerns. He also ran launched and ran his The Norfolk Way campaign to promote a new approach to developing a vibrant rural economy in Norfolk.
George was elected as the Member of Parliament for Mid Norfolk in May 2010, securing a 13,856 majority.
In his spare time George enjoys sailing on the Norfolk coast, walking, rowing, wildfowling, and going to the Imperial War Museum at Duxford with his children to watch the Spitfires.
